High school girls cross country: Bay girls aiming for big finish

The Bay Rockets girls cross country team has steamrolled its way to the Division II state meet and shows no sign of slowing down.

The Rockets won the district with ease, with seven runners placing in the top 10, including the top four spots. Bay finished the day with 16 points.

Last Saturday, Bay also won the regional championship, having three runners place in the top 10. Maddie Britton (18:55.05) finished third, Amanda Cusimano (19:05.72) placed fourth and Abby Christel (19:27.09) placed eighth.

Alyse Arko, Hallie Bechtel, Olivia Bechtel and Sarah Christel are also key components to Bay’s success this season and will look to guide Bay to a first-place finish at the state meet.

The Rockets are looking to redeem themselves after an eighth-place finish at the Division I state meet in 2012. Britton rounded out the top 10 with a time of 18:13.64.

Wargo runs for Wildcats

Besides the Bay girls, Keystone’s Shannon Wargo is the only other local girls runner at the Division II state meet. Wargo finished 14th at regionals (19:45.22) to advance to state.

Comets ready to soar

Amherst junior Alexis Szivan and sophomore Megan Parker are aiming for the top spot at the Division I state meet.

Szivan has been running well the past two weeks.

She finished second (19:56.25) at districts, guiding the Comets to a second- place finish at the meet, and at regionals, Szivan also placed second (18:38.24).

Parker placed fifth in the district (20:23.76) and sneaked into the state meet after finishing 15th at the regional (19:14.96).

Pirates eye team title

Although Rocky River is a young team, the Pirates have proven that they can compete with anybody.

On Rocky River’s team, there are three freshmen and three sophomores with one senior. Despite the underclassmen-filled roster, the Pirates won the Divison I district championship and went on to place third at regionals in order to move on to the state meet.

Freshman Anna Brandt has been the best runner for Rocky River during the postseason. She placed first in the district (19:41.22) and placed fifth at regionals (18:51.77).

Chloe Bierut, Ellen Corcoran, Laura DeVito, Nora McKeown, Elise Pichola and Terri Sack have contributed to Rocky River’s success and will hope to do the same on Saturday.

Boys cross country

Norwalk’s Quentin Howell, Avon’s Austin Fasciana and Avon Lake’s Tim Villari will represent their schools at the Division I state meet.

Howell finished fourth (15:50.08) at regionals, while Fasciana finished eighth (15:59.67). Villari finished 13th (16:07.40).

Villari finished second (17:08.41) at the Northeast District at Lorain County Community College while Fasciana (17:18.14) finished fifth.

Kevin Tomczyk of Huron placed ninth at the regionals (16:26.96) and will compete in Division II.
