Columbia's Larry Babics is Morning Journal Coach of the Year

After moving from the girls team to the boys team just before the start of the 2012-13 season, Columbia’s Larry Babics led the Raiders to their first conference championship in 22 years.

With a defensive-minded approach combined with great offensive talent including seniors Zach Stopper and Jacob Simon, the Raiders went 23-2 this year and reached the district semifinals.

“I think the guys definitely stepped up on that end of the floor,” Babics said. “We knew they were a pretty talented offensive group. They just needed to apply themselves a little more on the defensive end. Once they started winning and buying in to everything, they accepted the challenges of looking forward to trying to stop the other team as much as they look forward to scoring themselves.”
