Midview, Lakewood to join Southwestern Conference in 2015-16
Tuesday Southwestern Conference officials announced Midview and Lakewood will be leaving the West Shore Conference to join the SWC, bringing the total number of member schools to 10 in 2015.
Last December, it was announced that Avon would be joining the conference in the same year to fill the vacancy created by the merging of Berea and Midpark schools.
According to Midview Athletic Director Creg Jantz, there are mixed emotions about the move.
“We’re certainly going to miss some of the big rivalries we had in the West Shore Conference with schools like North Ridgeville and Elyria Catholic,” Jantz said. “We’re also looking forward to renewing some old conference rivalries with Amherst and Avon Lake.”
Midview has been a member of the West Shore Conference since it’s inception in 2005, after years of being part of the old Lorain County Conference.
“It’s not that the West Shore Conference wasn’t a good fit for us,” Jantz said. “It’s just the SWC is going to be a better fit for us.”
Jantz further added that the size of the schools that are in the SWC was a contributing factor in the decision — a decision that has been under consideration for some time.
“This wasn’t a decision that one person makes,” he said. “We certainly talked to our board members, administrators and coaching staff along the way. It wasn’t just a spur of the moment decision, but it was thought out. In the end, I believe everyone was on the same page.”
While the SWC will be growing to 10 schools, the most members it has had in its 76-year history, the West Shore Conference will have just five schools in its membership in 2015-16, if it doesn’t add schools before that. Jantz feels the WSC will be fine though.
“I think it’s a little premature to speculate on what will happen with those schools in the West Shore Conference, but it’s a great conference,” he said. “I think, when the smoke clears, they’ll find the type of schools they need, and they’ll be fine.”
