Geena Freriks, Taylor Vargo take podium at state

The Ohio high school swimming season came to an end Saturday as Division I divers and swimmers competed in the state championships at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Norwalk sophomore Geena Freriks took podium for the second straight year, finishing fourth in the 50 freestyle (23.59) and fourth in the 100 free (51.39).

I gave it my all, I’m not disappointed at all,” Freriks said. “I hope to keep moving up as the years go.”

Last year Freriks’ goal was to take podium (top eight), and she accomplished that by finishing seventh in both events. This year her goal was to place seventh or better in both.

“I am extremely pleased,” Freriks added. “I had great opponents.”

Sandusky senior Taylor Vargo came in second in the 100 breastroke (1:03.23) behind ursuline’s Bridget Blood, who posted a time of 1:03.09.

On Friday it was D-II divers and swimmers who took to the pool, with Bay’s Elizabeth Auckley and Pekins’ Sean Mulvin winning individual state titles.

Auckley, who was making her third state appearance in as many years, took home the gold in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.56. She also placed fifth in the 100 backstroke in 56.57.

Mulvin swam the fastest time in the 100 freestyle, doing so in 46.50. Hewas also part of the Pirates’ 200 medley and 200 free relay teams that won state titles.

Perkins’ 200 medley relay team of Drew Biro, Kevin Bressler, Michael Kessler and Mulvin finished in 1:34.80. The 200 free relay team of Mulvin, Kessler, CJ Capizzi and Bressler finished in 1:26.15.

Kessler nearly won an individual title in the 100 fly, placing second behind Wilmington’s Josh Quallen in 50.01.
