AuBree LaForce becomes all-time leading scorer at Vermilion

MORNING JOURNAL FILE PHOTO Vermilion’s AuBree LaForce became the Sailors’ all-time leading scorer on Wednesday night in a game vs. Avon.

It was only appropriate Vermilion senior AuBree LaForce became the Sailors’ all-time leading scorer in their last home game of the season.

In front of the home crowd, family and friends, LaForce scored 11 points and passed Jill Dodson with 1,136 career points in the Sailors loss against Avon on Wednesday. Dodson, who graduated in 1997, set the previous mark of 1,135

LaForce set the record with a 3-pointer from the left-hand corner with 1:38 remaining in the third quarter. As the ball went through the net, she jumped in the air in celebration. The game was stopped and the announcer told the crowd her accomplishment which drew a standing ovation.

“I knew it was going in as soon as it left my hand,” LaForce said. “I was really happy hitting that shot. It’s nice to get the record — which has been a goal of mine.

“I wanted to do it on my home court and have a benchmark of my last home game.”

The four-year starter has been a wiz at handling the ball and finding ways to score. Whether it was a deadly outside shot, a driving layup or from the free-throw line, LaForce has always found a way to score.

“It’s an incredible achievement,” Vermilion coach Colin Irish said. “It is a reflection of how hard she has worked with all the hours she has put in. I’m very proud of her.”

While she has one more regular season game left in her career, LaForce has already left her mark on the record books and in Vermilion lore.
